The day after they graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 1890, two students set out to travel around the world by bicycle. It took them just under three years to cover 15,044 miles, during which time they took over 2500 photographs. Across Asia is “a series of sketches describing the most interesting part” of their journey--the ride across Asia from Constantinople to Peking. They traveled on ‘safety bicycles,’ bicycles (similar in design to today’s) that replaced the popular, but dangerously large-wheeled penny-farthings.
