This set of six maps traces the distribution of advertising agencies in Shanghai in the long term 1905-1943. The first map provides an overview of the distribution of advertising agencies during the entire period. The five following maps provides snapshots of their distribution during the five "timeslices" identified as relevant "timeframes" for periodizing the history of advertising in Shanghai in this dissertation: before 1919, 1919-1929, 1930-1937, 1938-1943, after 1943.
Beyond the first impression of scattering, advertising agencies tended to be attracted by the central business district of Shanghai - that is, the Bund and Central district in the International Settlement.
NB The figures are based on the Shanghai Municipal Archives. Points placed in the river refer to unidentifed locations.
