TitleMembers of the Shanghai Rotary Club (1948)
Year Start1948
DateSunday 10 February 2019
Description

The table lists the members of the Shanghai Rotary Club in 1948, with their name and nickname,  their date of birth date (month, day), date of election (when they joined the Rotary), their nationality, their occupation, employer, class of business (according to the Rotary official classification), their business and residence address in Shanghai, and the offices they hold within the Rotary.

The original source comes from the Hoover Institution Archives, Calder's Papers (box 7, folder 3). This is the latest roster we have. The Rotary probably disappeared shortly after (with the Communist takeover in 1949).

The first sheet contains the data (list of Rotarians). The other sheets contain the pivot tables that I used for analyzing the membership and other social patterns of the club (date of election, nationality, election+nationality, position, occupation). My preliminary findings suggest that the Shanghai Rotary was more culturally inclusive than it is usually thought - much more than traditional British clubs. Although it remained very elitist in terms of social status, it was nonetheless a genuinely transnational and transprofessional organization (see the Graphs section).

NB The Shanghai Rotary Club was established in 1919 by American expatriates as part of the worldwide network Rotary International (the first club was established in Chicago in 1912).
