Curiously, although "Bournville cocoa" was a British brand, it was not advertised in the British newspaper North China Daily News. Moreover, it was an American company (Carl Crow, Inc) that was in charge of advertising the product in the streets of Shanghai - and probably in the Shenbao too. According to Carl Crow, "Bournville Cocoa" served as a "laboratory" for introducing very popular advertising devices such as the "health appeal" and "testimonials" in Shanghai (Crow, 1937: 209-210).
