"Ginseng" medicines were confined to the Shenbao and never appeared in the North China Daily News. This suggests that "ginseng" remained a "typically" Chinese remedy, addressing exclusively the Chinese. Beyong this appearant permanence, "ginseng" formulas changed over time: first sold as pure/raw (人參 renshen) in 1914-1924, then as "sugar/honey" (蜜餞 mijian) since 1924, it eventually found its way into a variety of forms in 1949 - not only pure but also as gums (純黑驢皮膠 chunhai lupijiao), ointment (參燕百補膏 shenyan baigao) or pills (配煎膏滋藥 peijiangaoziyao, 再造丸 zaizaowan).
