Champagne was one of the earliest alcoholic drink advertised in Shanghai, as early as 1914. Yet it was only advertised in the British newspaper North China Daily News and in the streets of Shanghai only. As it was not advertised in the Chinese newspaper Shenbao, this absence suggests that Chinese consumers did not drink champagne at the time, while they favor other foreign spirits (such as beer, whisky or brandy/cognac). Moreover, champagne quickly disappeared from the press after 1924, probably competed by new popular beverages, both alcoholic (beers) and soft drinks (sodas).
Champagne was generally advertised as a typically French alcohol.
