Advertisements for restaurants appeared rather lately - only in 1934 - in both newspapers. This suggests that the field of gastronomy developped only in the 1930s, and was part of the wider blooming of a nightlife and urban culture of consumption and entertainement in Shanghai.

We further observe a trend toward cuisine specialization/diversification in the 1940s - advertisements offered various types of both Western and Chinese cuisine to Shanghai consumers.
