Advertisements for "ham" in particular and meat in general remained exceptional in the Shenbao. This suggests that Chinese consumers were not used to eating meat. This further supports Carl Crow's observation that due to religious practices essentiallly (buddhism), Chinese diet was mostly vegetarian.* The region of Yunnan seemed to be particularly known for ham production.
