Makes a preliminary distinction between two geographical areas in China, colloquially known as (1) the Japanese "occupied" areas of the eastern seaboard under the direct military control of Japanese authorities or Japanese sponsored Chinese local administrative "puppet" units; and (2) "Free" China, still under the control of the Chinese National Government, comprising the "southwestern six provinces", plus the various foreign concessions in several treaty ports.
