Description

R.W. Yorke (D.C. Special Branch) to Commissioner of Police. Shanghai, May 24, 1940. SMA (SMC), U1-4-3821 (0425).

The "Crystal" newspaper, a mosquito publication was registered with the S.M. Police in the name Mr. A.L. Teodoro, and American citizen, on May 3, 1939. The newspaper was a source of annoyance from the time of registration until Mr. Teodor was convicted in the U.S. Court for China on April 23 1940, on charges of publishing indecent articles. Mr. Teodoro severed his connection with the newspaper and on April 27, 1940, a new certificate was issued to one Chow Tien Lai [] after he had signed a bond and given every possible assurance that he would not offend against Municipal Notifications of the laws of the Republic of China.

On May 20 and 21, advertisements describing indecent performances showing at the Ning Kung Theatre, Edinburgh Road, and the Zing An Theatre, corner of Yu Yuen and Tifeng Roads, were published in the newspaper. The eidtor has been interviewed and cannot advance any reasonble excuse for this lapse. The certificate has again been withdrawn and the aditor warned that no further publication will be permitted.
