Abstract

Summarizes the address that the Secretary of the American Chamber of Commerce, W.A. Chapman, delivered at the weekly meeting of the Shanghai Rotary Club, on the subjet of "The Work of the Commercial Secretary" : definition, duties, special courses that American universities (notably Harvard) offered in this profession. Also traces the rapid development of American Chambers of Commerce throughout the world, emphasizing that the American Chamber of Commerce in China was one of the first to be organized outside the United States (just after Paris). Finally describes the service American Chamber of Commerce have rendered to the business community, its effort toward developing American trade in China, particularly its significant role in initating the bill for the Federal Incorporation of American COmpanies in China, and other countries where extraterritoriality exists, whereby American companies may be placed on an equal basis with competitors of other nationalites.
