This set of five maps shows the gradual centers of advertising population in Shanghai foreign settlements between 1905-1943. While the first map scovers the entire, each ot the four following maps cover a specific "timeslice" : before 1919, 1919,1929, 1930-1937 and 1938-1943.
These maps have been drawn after the Shanghai Municipal Archives (esesentially based on the two major census of advertising hoardings in the International settlement in 1914 and 1943). This map clearly reveals three main "centers" or "axis" of advertising population in the long term (concentrating 20 to 100 recorded advertisements):
- In the International settlement Northern district (mostly hoardings owned by the Oriental Advertising Agency in 1914)
- three centers along the Nanking/Bubbling Well Road axis (a major axis where the "maximum rate" is applied as soon as 1914).
- Two centers along two major axis within the French Concession or on the boundary road between the International Settlement and French Concession (East of Edward VII avenue and West of Avenue Joffre).
