This series of three maps aims to visualize the geography of luminous advertising in Shanghai from three different perspectives (a) temporal: before and after the introduction of neon lights in 1929 (b) material: the nature of artifacts (c) by industrial sector: the categories of advertisers using light to advertise their products). The data used to create the maps were compiled from various files dealing with illuminated advertising at the Shanghai Municipal Archives (U series).
