This table offer a synthetical view of the various types of areas (depending on their nature) (first sheet) and traffic conditions (second sheet) identified by Hoyle in his handbook dedicated to outdoor advertising in the United States, published in 1936. By contrast, that typology did not apply to Shanghai at the time, and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to establish such a refined and clean-cut classification of districts and subdistricts in the Chinese yet multicultural city of Shanghai.
