TitleMembers of the Shanghai Rotary Club (1930)
Year Start1930
DateSunday 10 February 2019
Description

The table lists the members and officers of the Shanghai Rotary Club in 1930, with their actual name and nickname, their membership status, the organization they worked for, their business address in Shanghai, their occupation (according to the Rotary official classification), their position (service) within the Rotary Club - whenever available.

The original document also includes a photograph of each member. The original source comes from the Calder's Papers (Box 19, folder 1) at the Hoover Institution Archives.

The first sheet lists all members in 1930 and the second sheet lists the officers during the same year. The third sheet is a preliminary analysis of members' occupations (according the Rotary official classification). My preliminary findings suggest that the Shanghai Rotary was more culturally inclusive than it is usually thought - much more than traditional British clubs. Although it remained very elitist in terms of social status, it was nonetheless a genuinely transnational and transprofessional organization  (see the "Graphs" section).

NB The Shanghai Rotary Club was established in 1919 by American expatriates as part of the worldwide network Rotary International (the first club was established in Chicago in 1912).
