While cigarettes were widely advertised in both newspapers and streets of Shanghai, cigars remained confined to the British newspaper North China Daily News, and were advertised only at the beginning of the period (1914-1924). This suggests that smoking cigars was a specifically foreign practice of consumption, that was rapidly replaced by cigarettes in the mid-1920s.
