Compared to beer or whisky, absinthe appeared only in the Shenbao in 1924. This brief appearance and absolute exclusion from the British newspaper may be accounted for by the prohibition that hung over "absinthe" in most European countries since the early twentieth century. This further suggests that Western manufacturers could escape from prohibition by advertising absinthe in Chinese newspapers.
