Bakery was advertised in the North China Daily News only. This suggests that Chinese consumers were not used to eating bread and pastry. This further supports Carl Crow's observation that due to religious practices essentiallly (buddhism), Chinese diet was mostly vegetarian.* In the North China Daily News, bakery was often classified as "German". Like butchery, bakery was presented as a German specialty.
