Fresh fruits and vegetables were advertised in the North China Daily News only, as early as 1924. Their absence in the Chinese newspaper Shenbao supports Carl Crow's observations on the Chinese diet, precisely the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables.*
On the opposite, foreign readers were then offered a wide range of fruits and vegetables: "Apples, d'Anjou Pears, Grape Fruit, Oranges, Celery, Cauliflowers, Potatoes".
