While ham was exceptionnally advertised in the Shenbao only, salami was advertised in the North China Daily News only. This suggests that Chinese consumers were not used to eat much meat. This further supports Carl Crow's observation that due to religious practices essentiallly (buddhism), Chinese diet was mostly vegetarian.*
