Reports an expert's point of view (J.B Tayler, Prof at the Department of Economics at Yenching University, Beijing) on the recent creation of consumers' cooperative stores by missionary organizations in Beijing. The expert observes that they did not meet with the same success as farm credit associations in Asia, which he explains by
- the lack of experienced and capable persons to manage the stores (i.e. the lack of a professional class - such as the army or navy or civil service stores in England);
- the absence of an industrial population in China, i.e. the absence of a large community of people having needs of similar nature which can be supplied by a cooperatively-owned stores
Tayler calls for the establishement of a cooperative store at the new site of Yenching University west of Peking, that would serve as a sort of laboratory for practice in cooperative organization and as a self-help opportunity for students.
