This set of four maps shows the distribution of recorded shopsigns in Shanghai foreign settlements between 1905-1943. Though existing for a long time, shopsigns entered quite lately in the municipal archives. They started to be recorded only in the 1920s, in connection with new regulations and taxation. 

These maps have been drawn after my own records in the Shanghai Municipal Archives. They show only a tiny fraction of the existing shopsigns in Shanghai.
