This set of six maps aims to reveals patterns of correlations between the locations of advertising agencies in Shanghai and their cultural origins (Western in blue, Chinese in red, Japanese in yellow). The first map provides an overview of the distribution of advertising agencies during the entire period 1905-1943. The five following maps provides snapshots of their distribution during the five "timeslices" identified as relevant "timeframes" for periodizing the history of advertising in Shanghai in this dissertation: before 1919, 1919-1929, 1930-1937, 1938-1943, after 1943.
While the majority of Western agencies tended to concentrate in the Central district of the International Settlement, Japanese agencies seemed to be attracted by the Northern district. As for Chinese agencies, their is no clear pattern of distribution: they were scattered all over the city of Shanghai.
NB The figures are based on the Shanghai Municipal Archives. Points placed in the river refer to unidentifed locations.
