The following graph helps visualize the network of Consolidated National Advertising Co. (Lianhe guanggao gongsi 聯合廣告公司) - one of the largest Chinese advertising agencies established prior to 1949 - based on its six key actors' institutional affiliation and participation in social events between 1910 and 1949: Lu Meiseng 陆梅僧 (manager), Lu Shoulun 陸守倫(account director), Wang Yingbin 汪英賓 (art director), Yao Junwei 姚君偉 (submanager), Zhang Zhuping 张竹平(board chairman), and Zheng Yaonan 鄭耀南 (managing director). We distinguish between four main types of relations: business, education, political, social (philanthropy), teaching, and other (club membership, leisure, etc). We propose to use this two-mode network to analyze patterns of shared affiliations and co-participation between our six key actors.
Drawing on data extracted from the local press (mostly the Shenbao, and some English-language newspapers - North-China Herald, China Weekly Review, China Press) and Who's Who, we built a two-mode weighted network linking individuals and institutions, keeing only unique co-occurrences and adding a weight corresponding to the total number of co-occurrences we had initially. NB in other version, we built a multiplex maintaining all co-occurences between a given individual and a given institution.
The initial edge lists contains three main columns:
- source individuals
- target institutions
- weight
The node list adds key attributes:
- source name (individual or institution)
- type of actor (type 1) : collective or individual
- nature of institution (relation) (type 2) : business, education, political, etc.
