Description

Notice from Public Works Department to Occupier - 182 Szechuen Road. "Unauthorized Building Operation". Shanghai, November 5, 1926.  Source: SMA (SMC), U1-14-3262 (0544). 

To the Occupier 182 Szechuen Road. Unauthorized Building Operation 182 Szechuen Road, Cadastral Lot 19, Central District. It is reported that the following work has been carried out withtout a permit and contrary to the Municipal Regulations : A lamp fixed, projecting 5'-0" into the Municipal Roadway. 

I have therefore to inform you that unless the unauthorized work complained of be removed within seven days of to-day's date, it will be demolished by this (Public works) Department by virtue of the powers conferred on the Council under Land Regulations number XXX.

With reference to your letter No. 4821 of 5/11/26, instructing us to removed a lamp alleged to be projecting 5' into the Municipal Roadway, may be draw your attention to the fact that this lamp was not projected over the roadway, but over the footpath. It was erected about 4-5' from the wall and only about 2,5 feet from the verandah. We understand that it is the Council's Regulations that no lamp should be erected more than 3 feet from the verandah, and in this case may we request you to order the existing lamp to be removed, as ours is only about 2,5 from the verandah and that this lamps has been in its present position for five months?

With reference to your letter of the 9th instant. I beg to inform you that the Council's Regulations require lamps to be at least 11 feet above the footpath and with a projection of not more than 3 feet from the boundary line of the property. I must request you to kindly appl for a permit for the erection of the lamp in question, and to have the same altered to comply with the above regulations.
