Shoh Wen Doo to Commissioner of Public Works - "Re: Removal of the entrance lamp". Shanghai, March 12, 1928. Source: SMA (SMC), U1-14-3262 (0547).

Re: The removal of the entrance lamp. I have been instructed by my client, Ching Juen Bath-house, a Portuguese firm, at 320 Avenue Edward VII, Shanghai, to inform you that on the 8th instant, at about 4 p.m. the lamp at the entrance of the above, with their firm's name thereone, was removed by you and that, concerning the matter, no previous notice was received, nor any reason given at the time of its removal. In view of the lamp having been there for several years withtout any interference, my client is doubting very much as to the authorities of the persons, who acted in the matter.

I shall be very much obliged if you will be so kind as to let me know the reason why the lamp was taken down. Should the case be contrary to any new regulations, please let me know.

Thanking you in anticipation for your kind attention.

With reference to your letter of the 12th instant (March 1928), I beg to inform you that the manager of the bath-house was informed verbally by a representative of this Department on several occasions during the last few weeks that the lamp would require to be either altered to comply with Municipal Regulations, which limit the projection to three feet, or be removed. The lamp in question projected seven feet. At the time of removal the matter was again explained, and it was also shown how the lamp could be refixed to comply with Municipal Regulations.

I shall be greatly obliged if you will kindly inform your client that there still remain two lamps which project five feet over the public way, and which should be altered aso as to reduce the projection to three feet only.
