Our Inspectors have brought ot our attention the fact that a large Neon Sign has been erected on the canopy of the Golden Castle Theatre at the corner of Avenue Foch and Yates Road. This sign is constructed entirely of wood and its supports are also of wood. In our opinion it constitutes a fire hazard especially in wet weather. We furthermore understand that Neon signs are strictly forbidden to be erected on canopies in the International Settlement and as a matter of fact have been compelled to turn down many requests from our licents to make such installations. We must confess therefore that we are rather surprised that this sign could have been installed and would like to know whether a P.W.D permit has been obtained for its erection.

In reply to your letter dated the 20th instant, I have to inform you that the proprietors of the cinema on the above mentioned site have already been served with a notice to remove the unauthorized timber sign which has been erected on the canopy. I would point out that there are recent cases where neon light tubing has been allowed to be fixed on the calances of reinforced concrete and steel canopies. Should you required that your representative call at the Building Surveyor's Officen, Room 29, Administration Building.
