We have obtained the consent of the French Tramways and the French Municipal Council to paint an advertisement on the foot boards of the French trams.
The Tramway Company however request us to write to you asking whether you would have any objections to this advertisement on the few cars which are crossing over to your side of the Avenue Edouard VII.
We therefore ask you to kindly give your consent to this advertisement and oblige.
Letter from Acting Secretary to Oriental Press. Shanghai, June 17, 1921. Source: SMA (SMC), U1-3-1284 (2003).
We have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 15 on the subject of an advertisement which you have received permission from the French Municipal Council and the French Tramways Company top place on the Company's cars, and requesting the Council's assent to this advertisement being carried by such cars as are operated in the Settlement. In reply, I am directed to inform you that the Shanghai Electric Construction Company are not permitted to place any advertisements on their cars, and therefor the granting of your present application would constitute an injustice to that Company. It is regretted accordingly, that the Council is unable to comply with your request.
