TitleChinese members of the Rotary Club of Shanghai
Year Start1920
Year End1948

Description

The following tables represent the most complete/extensive list of Chinese members of the Rotary Club of Shanghai we were ale to compile, with their membership attributes and basic biographical information. The list also includes members of the Chinese-speaking Rotary Club of Shanghai West, established in 1948 in parallel with the original Shanghai Club (1919).

The first table contains every occurrence of every member we were able to find in rosters, with their membership attributes. The second table retains only unique members with their biographical attributes. The two spreadsheets contain multiple sheets that contain the pivot tables we used for conducting statistical analyses (see the “Graphs” section).

Membership data comes from rosters and membership lists available in Rotary International Archives, Evanston, Ill.* They provide information on member's nickname, date of joining, major and minor classification (professional group), employer, qualification/position, business and residential address (for specific years only: 1937-8, 1948); membership status (active/ordinary, honorary, additional member), number and level of offices taken in the service of the club.

Biographical data was extracted from the series of Who’s who available through the Integrated Information System on Modern and Contemporary Characters (IISMCC) hosted by the Academia Sinica’s Institute of Modern History. For each individual we were able to identify, we provide information on the year and place of birth, age at joining, ancestry/native place (whenever différent from their place of birth); country and university of education, academic major and degree; social-professional and geographical mobility -- based on the number of salaried and non-salaried positions held during their career, the range of sectors in which they were employed, and the number of places they visited during their life.

*More specifically, we relied on twenty-seven rosters and membership lists issued between 1920 and 1948, which represents an average of 1.5 per year, except during the war (no rosters were available between 1940 and 1945). In addition to Rotary International archives, two rosters (1938-9 and 1948) came from the American Commercial Attache A.B. Calder’s personal papers at the Hoover Institution Archives, Stanford, Calif. 1920 corresponds to the year the first Chinese (Y.C. Tong) was admitted to the club, while 1948 refers to the last roster at our disposal.
