We have an application from Messrs. Dennison & Sullivan of Nanking Road to fix for them a 1200 candle power lamp on a bracket over their entrance. This lamp is hexagonal and its smaller diameter is 3fts 3 inches. The footwalk outside Messrs. D&S. is a little over 2 ft. Wide and as some extra space is required for the bracket, the centre of the lamp would be over the curbstone and half would project over the roadway. Before sending in the usual application to fix same I shall be glad to know if there will be any objection to it on account of the projecting portion. The lamp will be suspended about 15 feet above the roadway so that there will be no danger or accident from it.

In reply to your letter of the 24th instant, I beg to say that I am not prepared to recommend the Council to permit the erection of a lamp such as you mention.

With reference to your application to us to fix a 1200 candle lamp over the entrance to your store we have informally approached the Municipal Council in the matter as we feared there might be some difficulty in the way of obtaining a permit. We have now received the following from the Municipal Engineer and therefore regret that we are at present unable to comply with your request.

I am in receipt of your memo re above and regret that you are unable to recommend the Council to permit the erection of this lamp as Messrs. D & S are very anxious to have a prominent light. I have sent them a copy of your memo and an explanatory note as per enclosed copy.
